It Happened to Nancy
It Happened to Nancy is a actual diary of a 14 year-old girl, and her experience with and without HIV and AIDS. You may not know this but there is about 42 millions of people with HIV and AIDS virus and more than 3 million victims die every year; this was posted in the Teen Health website in April 2007. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) that unfortunately lead to your death. Although HIV is very bad disease it can be controlled but not destroyed. Unfortunately AIDS is still can't be control but many doctor worldwide are trying to figure it out. In this book Nancy is used as the name of the anonymous teenager's name that is not known to public.
Nancy was like any other girl with friends and people that love her. Sometimes in her diary you could tell that she sometimes was a bit rebellious but sometimes she seems so calm that you might think she wasn't the same person. Her own rebellious attitude lead her from depression to her death. A character that really made Nancy’s life miserable was Collin. After they meet at the Garth concert after her asthma attack they began talking together. He told her that he was a collage student but he wasn't in collage at all. Then one night when her mother was out of town she invited him to her house and after she was told him it was time for him to leave The gaggles were always with her in everything well not everything but for the most past they were, three of her best friends were in the gaggle and one special friend named Lew during her last few months of her life they were together as boyfriend and girlfriend. Lew sounded very mature for that same reason Nancy started seeing thing in a different perspective she didn’t see before.
Nancy problem is probably the hardest problem to deal with, she has HIV and pretty soon she had AIDS. She had to deal from emotional problem to problems with the kids in her school that unfortunately had found out that she had AIDS. She even had to move to Arizona were he met his dad’s girlfriend, they got along very well, that she even got Nancy a summer job at her office. I think having AIDS or HIV is very hard to handle for anyone especially to a fourteen-year old teenager. After she found out she had HIV she deal with other sickness like blabber problems.
I think that her classmates made her experience much worse especially when she had her birthday party. She and her friends decided to go to the movies. Right in the middle of the movie she had an accident, she could control her blabber and it uran came out. She practically ran out of the movie theater. The fact that her parents were divorced made somethings harder but it also made things easier. The positive part was that when she had the incident she moved to her dad’s house. But it was difficult because she couldn't have both of parents together as a family when she needed it the most.
This diary really didn’t have a solution because it ended in a very sad ending, she died on April 12, two days after her last entry. But not all was sad weeks before she died she got very close to Cougar her aunt’s cat and her aunt’s dog, Red Alert, he had died a few days before her death, his death was a nice death he died during his sleep peacefully just like she did; anyways when she died she was buried next to her Uncle Rod and next to her feet was Red Alert. In her tombstone, its said “There will never be another Nancy.” Nancy never actually solved her problem but I think she kind of did because through out all of problems she had never gave up hope and she always hoped for the best.
If I were a critic I would give this book two thumb up and I would recommend it to anyone who asks. I recommend this book because this book has both sadness and excitement combined it one. Its not only a ordinary book it actually happened, to Nancy. The words in this book are Nancy's words. Her diary tells us everything, she went through. It said how did she felt with her inner problems and her outer problems. Although it was edit it sounded like they came directly from her. It wasn’t like they made it up, this actually happened to someone and it could happened to anyone in the world.
